Update: Samina Khokhar Reunited with Children

Feb 1, 2012

Jamaica, NEW YORK (February 1, 2012)- ICNA Relief is extremely pleased to report that Samina Khokhar and her children have been reunited. The children were recently taken from their mother’s care after allegations of neglect from the Administration of Child Services (ACS).

After complying with court mandated bereavement counseling and parenting classes, the court ruled Samina was capable of caring for her children. Mother and children were reunited on January 26, 2012 after weeks of separation.

It was recognized by the court that the professional support that ICNA Relief provided for Samina was sufficient to allow for the return of her children. ICNA Relief was able to offer responsive services for the family that adhered to the standards of the court, and will continue to do so as the family heals.
While the children have been reunited with their mother, they will remain under the scrutiny of the child welfare system. ICNA Relief will continue to monitor the case and provide all necessary support to ensure the family remains together and gains some level of self-sufficiency after the passing of its sole provider. These services include an in-depth service plan, continued counseling services, medical care and financial support.
Please visit ICNA Relief to support such services.

[…] Samina K., a Pakistani immigrant mother of five, had four of her children as well as her 18-year-old daughter’s child taken away last week. The children ranged from seven to two years old. Already bereaved by her husband’s death only a year ago, she and her eldest child, who is 18, have been devastated by the separation of their family. Rather than providing supportive services and allowing the family to recover after the death of their sole provider, the children were removed from their mother’s care by ACS based on flimsy allegations of neglect that have yet to be supported. The courts have already ruled that no abuse took place yet the children remain in foster care. Click here to see an update to this story. […]

Al-Hamdulillah the children are back with there mother. I am so sorry that the family went through such an ordeal. Unfortunately this things happen all the time due to people’s cultural differences and insensitivity and intolerance. No one says “how can I help” anymore it is too easy to just access blame and accuse wrong doing…and all of us need some kind of help and understanding sometime.

Salam I was extremely happy that ICNA Relief was able to resolve the issue through common ground and not making the issue bigger than life. We always critize easily about Muslim NGOs but masAllah icna relief got the job done. May Allah reward those who helped in any way possible.

As a Muslim woman in the south people always look with harsh eyes about hijab and clothing. I love my children their my world but my parent style shouldn’t be questioned by the government if I am a good mother. Regardless I am happy for the mom to have her kids back because only a mother knows that feeling of having your kids ripped out of your hands. I thank Allah and his servants that got the kids back to their mom. May Allah bless those involved and the organization.

I am simply out of words that the government would do such a irrational act. I am glad that we have professionals in the muslim community because we need smart elite individuals to handle delicate situations. I applaud ICNA relief for their dedicated workforce and may Allah bless them.
