—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—
JAMAICA, New York (October 27, 2011) – In a press release issued today, the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) congratulated the people of Tunisia on the democratic elections held this week, the first in nearly 50 years.
“We congratulate the people of Tunisia and the Ennahda party on the post-revolution democratic elections. Despite decades of torture, imprisonment and exile the Ennahda party remained committed to democracy and maintained a dignified struggle in face of adversaries. Its leadership led the Arab Spring and eventual transformation to democracy.
ICNA hopes that Western countries, including the United States, will wholeheartedly support this transformation and the choice of the Tunisian people.
We hope that the Arab regimes that are attempting to crush and resist the popular will of their citizens will follow the example of Tunisia and heed and respect the democratic process.”
Today marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic events of September 11, 2001. It serves as both a reminder of one of the most traumatizing occurrences to unfold on American soil and as a testimony to the resilience of every community living here in America.
