Emergency response to deadly Indonesia earthquake

Emergency Response Scales Up Following Second Earthquake Relief
 
(Detroit MI, Oct. 2, 2018) – The Islamic Circle of North America is asking the community to offer prayers for the victims of a major earthquake and Tsunami in Indonesia. ICNA’s overseas relief agency Helping Hand for Relief & Development (HHRD) announced emergency relief for the disaster.

According to last count the numbers of dead has exceeded 1350 with thousands injured and displaced. The Natural Disaster and Mitigation Agency estimated widespread damage in the town of 300,000 where 10 fore and aftershocks of 5.0 magnitude were felt. HHRD is in close contact with local partner NGO PKPU and are monitoring the situation in Sulawesi as information continues to be provided.
This earthquake comes a month after the deadly earthquake that killed hundreds in the island of Lombok. HHRD immediately launched its Indonesia Relief Fund following the earthquake in Lombok to provide water, food, shelter and medical assistance through PKPU. Countries in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) have been the center of natural disasters recently and HHRD is on alert to provide assistance where needed.

Located in what is known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire” Indonesia is prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and floods. The most infamous quake, which in turn caused a tsunami, was in 2004 and cost 230,000 people their lives.
Reports continue to trickle out of the region as emergency personnel assess the damages and need for relief. Thousands have been injured and displaced; HHRD is speaking closely with PKPU with regards to the situation on the ground. Emergency relief items needed include local sources for shelter, medical assistance, food, clean water, hygiene items and much more!
The earthquake on August 5th, 2018 issued an early tsunami warning and as many as 80 aftershocks felt in the resort islands of Bali and Lombok. Damages to infrastructures included 5,448 homes, 15 education facilities, 5 places of worship, 55 health facilities, 37 stores, and 1 bridge.

HHRD will continue to monitor the situation and update our donors in a timely manner. HHRD partner NGO is working with additional personnel from Jakarta and Jogjakarta as well as local volunteers. The inclusion of poor in our festivity must be done without which we cannot complete our service to Allah SWT. How many societies the poor is left out of the pie and the rich eats the entire pie. A few weeks ago, we celebrated Eid-ul Fitr. And on that Eid, we enjoy its virtues by giving the Zakaat-ul Fitr to the poor before we begin the Eid prayer. This Eid we have to complete its celebration by giving 1/3 of the meat to the poor and needy. As Allah SWT says: Then eat thereof and feed therewith the poor who have a very hard time.
