Restaurants across the country are making sure health care workers at the frontlines are getting a hot meal.
“It really fires us up,” said Ryan Fry, co-owner of Sudwerk Brewing in Davis. “The community’s been great. They’ve been stepping up and coming out.”
Fry said business has changed since the coronavirus outbreak.
“We started online ordering, curbside pickup, trying to keep that distance as much as possible. We’re trying to keep the community safe, but also keep our business going.”
While the way they serve the community has changed, their commitment to it remains the same.
“All donations will be pooled to feed the frontline workers,” Fry said. “As we get more donations in, we will be donating more and more food.”
The brewery is collecting donations online then cooking up piping hot meals for nurses, doctors and health care workers.
“Our first donation is going to be this Sunday at Sutter Davis,” Fry said. “We’re going to be cooking up paella.”
Donations can be made through the brewery’s website.
In Sacramento, Midici Neapolitan Pizza is also cooking up hot meals.
For owner Cheng Wang, feeding the frontlines is personal. His wife, Helen, is a nurse practitioner.
“They’re working so many hours, they don’t even have time to eat,” he said.
Customers can order pizzas to be delivered to health care workers.
“There’s just that moment of reprieve where everything fades away and it’s just you and the food,” Cheng said.
Just down K Street in Sacramento, Skip’s Fish and Chicken partnered up with ICNA, a national group helping distribute meals. Skip’s has helped feed 55 health care workers.
