Detroit, MI – On Saturday, Oct. 8th, Muslim Family Services hosted a neighborhood cleanup for all community members to come together and clean the streets of Hamtramck and Detroit. Volunteers arrived to the MFS office at 9:30 a.m. and were welcomed with a hearty breakfast of waffles with fresh fruit, maple syrup and whipped cream, muffins, donuts, and coffee.

After enjoying their meal and meeting other volunteers, MFS executive director Khalid Iqbal welcomed the Mayor of Hamtramck, Karen Majewski, to give a brief speech to all volunteers. Majewski expressed her appreciation for the efforts and generosity of all volunteers in coming to dedicate time to the betterment of the city.

With her enthusiasm and words of encouragement, volunteers were ready to take on the city with a renewed sense of energy. They formed groups of 4-5 and were assigned a specific location/street to clean.

Each group received one broom and dustpan, and an ICNA Relief bag filled with garbage bags, gloves, and phone numbers of MFS staff who would be readily available for assistance.

Volunteers spent about two hours cleaning, whilst realizing first-hand that there are immense amounts of trash on the streets that we don’t notice as passersby. They walked back to the MFS office after finsihing up their task, interacted with other volunteers, and then were served lunch to end the event – pizza, pasta, salad, and biryani (a traditional South Asian rice dish).
