—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—
Seattle, WA, (June 24, 2010) – In a press release issued today, the Islamic Circle of North America’s Washington State Chapter condemned the act of vandalism on its van and called on law enforcement agencies for investigation of this possible hate crime.
A window (above) and windshield (below) was vandalized along with a door handle.
The van, which displays the toll free number and website of ICNA’s 1-877-WhyIslam outreach project on its exterior, was smeared with feces on the window, windshield and side door handle. A member of the local ICNA chapter noticed the vandalism after the noon prayers today and reported the incident to the local police.
Dr. Muhammad Ayub, Secretary of ICNA Washington Chapter said, “This hate crime shows we have to work harder to promote proper understanding of Islam and to negate the poison and false propaganda being spread by misinformation.”
Since its inception the van has become a familiar sight in the neighborhood.
He also added, “We need to eloquently articulate what we believe in to our fellow Americans; [not only for numerous other reasons, but also] for our children, who will be part of the fabric of this society.”
The utility van, which is used by various local organizations in the community, was parked outside the Islamic Center of Eastside in Bellevue, Washington. The vandalism, which may have occurred during the previous night, was the first such incident witnessed by the local ICNA chapter.
