-—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—-

(NEW YORK, NY, Nov. 16, 2014) – The Islamic Circle of North America denounces the brutal beheading of humanitarian aid worker Abdul Rahman Kassig by the Syria-based ISIS.

Kassig, who embraced Islam in 2013, was an emergency medical technician and the founder of an NGO called Special Emergency Response and Assistance, through which he delivered food and medical supplies to refugee camps scattered along the Syrian border.

In an interview with Time Magazine in January of last year, he said he planned to continue to aid those who were in need for as long as he lived. It was in taking a stand and serving those who had little hope that he found meaning in life.

After becoming captive, in a letter to his parents he said, “If I do die, I figure that at least you and I can seek refuge and comfort in knowing that I went out as a result of trying to alleviate suffering and helping those in need.”

ICNA offers its heartfelt prayers and condolences to Kassig’s family and loved ones. “The loss of Kassig is a loss to us all, particularly the people he served in Syria. He stood up for what was right,” said Naeem Baig, president of ICNA. “The inhumane and brutal actions of ISIS are abhorrent and a gross violation of what Islam teaches about justice and mercy.”

In earlier statements, ICNA has condemned previous murders of civilians by ISIS. It again reiterates its repudiation of the terror group and its twisted ideology.

The Islamic Circle of North America is a leading American Muslim organization dedicated to the betterment of society through the application of Islamic values. Since 1968, ICNA has worked to build relations between communities by devoting itself to education, outreach, social services and relief efforts.

Your reporting would have been more sincere had you also mentioned some place Kassig’s original name and faith. It was that faith that had led him to go there in the first place.
