—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—
NEW YORK, NY (July 28, 2013) – The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) condemns yesterday’s massacre of scores of peaceful protestors and demands an immediate cessation of U.S. military aid to Egypt. The Egyptian military must safeguard the lives and properties of all Egyptians and must not become a hurdle for Egyptian democracy.
The politics of dividing the Egyptian people into sects and groups for political gain will only further destabilize Egyptian society. The Egyptian people must use proper judgment and engage in inclusive discourse with all political parties to chart out a stable and secure democratic future.
Efforts to prosecute political leadership, including President Morsi, must stop. These actions are a witch-hunt against a legitimate political entity and its supporters.
ICNA urges President Obama to utilize all diplomatic channels in calming the situation.
The undermining of democracy and the suppression of freedom of expression in Egypt require immediate action. We appeal to our fellow citizens to contact the White House, the Defense Secretary and the Secretary of State and demand immediate steps to stop the brutality that has devastated hundreds of lives.
In this month of Ramadan, ICNA requests American Muslims to keep the people of Egypt and all those suffering from oppression and tyranny in their prayers. We ask God All-Mighty to bring peace and stability to places plagued with uncertainty and fear.
The Islamic Circle of North America is a leading American Muslim organization dedicated to the betterment of society through the application of Islamic values. Since 1968, ICNA has worked to build relations between communities by devoting itself to education, outreach, social services and relief efforts.
