—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—

NEW YORK, NY (May 25, 2019) – The President of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Javaid Siddiqi called for observance of respect towards all religions, Holy Scriptures and prophets. He also urged better coordination with DC Mayor & Police.

Director of Government relations Mr. Asif Khan met with the officials at the offices of the Mayor of Washington D.C. Muriel Bowser and the Chief of Police Peter Newsham, and delivered letters on behalf of Mr. Siddiqi.
While thanking the Washington Metropolitan Police Department for their help, Mr. Siddiqi addressed the issue which arose when a small group of protesters used inappropriate language towards Islam and our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at the annual ICNA convention at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in D.C. last month.
He stated “We are aware that cities and counties, along with police and sheriff’s departments around the country have to consider the First Amendment rights of our fellow Americans with quiet, peaceful and nonviolent protests.” However, we urge the concerned authorities that any disrespect or indecent gesture towards any Prophet and Holy scriptures including Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Holy Quran should not be allowed under the constitutional right of first Amendment.
Furthermore, in order to avoid any unpleasant incident, meetings were requested with these offices so that a plan could be chalked out for next year’s convention during April 10-12. The convention, which will be at the same venue, is expected to be attended by about 25 thousand delegates.
