"Ramadan and charity are like brother and sister," said Naeem Baig, a spokesman for the Islamic Circle of North America, which is providing earthquake aid. "We know from the life of the Prophet ... that during the month of Ramadan his generosity is described as a 'rain that comes with the wind.' "Islamic charities across the country say they are capable of handling contributions appropriately. "I can confidently say that Almighty God is watching our organization," said Naeem Baig, spokesman for the Islamic Circle of North America. "Our organization is open." The non-profit organization based in Jamaica, N.Y., wants to raise $10 million and is in touch with relief organizations across Pakistan. Baig said informal networks have contributed to traffic jams and clogged roads, hampering relief efforts in Pakistan."

"The timing of the catastrophic earthquake, during the holy month of Ramadan, has brought special sadness, as well as opportunities, said Azeem Khan, assistant secretary-general of the Queens-based Islamic Circle of North America. "At every single mosque, the entire community is gathering every night, so this gives us an opportunity to reach out to them," he said.
