—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—

JAMAICA, New York (March 2, 2013) – The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) issued a press release today on the escalating violence in Bangladesh.

The current regime has introduced one-party rule in Bangladesh by silencing opposing views, and the country has quickly descended into anarchy. Extra-judicial killings, abduction, and murders of journalists and opposition figures are rampant.

The regime has created the International Crimes Tribunal under the guise of trying those responsible for 1971 war crimes. Instead, this court is being used to silence opposition figures such as well-known religious scholar Delware Hossain Sayedee, who was recently condemned to death without proper trial.
The regime has also organized massive rallies, utilizing the government apparatus to pressure judges for the death penalty while opposition rallies are being crushed. Just days ago police shot and killed 35 peaceful protestors who were protesting against unjust verdicts.
Ambassador-at-large Stephen Rapp, the United Nations, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the International Bar Association and numerous other agencies have expressed serious concern that courts such as the International Crimes Tribunal are in violation of international laws.
ICNA President Naeem Baig appealed to the Obama administration and particularly the U.S. Department of State saying, “The International Crimes Tribunal is in serious violation of human rights. We must pressure the Bangladesh government to reconstitute the tribunal based on international standards and recommendations by Ambassador-at-Large Stephen Rapp.”

  1. I read this article and wondered how ICNA stated this without any fact. ICNA should not mislead the people as a Muslim organization in USA. I am a Bangladeshi and I Protest against this misleading statement. I also came to know that one of the war collaborators, Ashrafuzzaman Khan, the chief al-Badr (Jamai Death squad in 1971) executioners, is now head of the Queens branch of Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA). No wonder why ICNA take parts with this killers!
The fact is Bangladesh is taking steps to bring under justice for those Pakistani collaborators who made genocide in Bangladesh in 1971 along with Pakistani army.
It is a shame for ICNA that they want to take side with the collaborators as such that Bangladesh Govt. is doing this for silencing opposition well-known figures. Since the trial started these collaborators’ party “Jamaat-e-Islami Islam and Shibir” have started country wide strike, destruction of life and property. They are attacking law enforcement. To protect the general people police has no choice but to take action.
I suggest either you know the fact properly or do not mislead the North American Muslims. It is a shame again for ICNA to state such a misleading statement!!

  2. Dear ICNA,
May Allah(SWT) bless this organization for speaking out against injustice and oppression that is being carried out by the current Awami Regime in Bangladesh.
As a Bangladeshi, I am totally in support and appreciate of the stand that ICNA has taken against the current regime, who ratified the constitution and has taken out a mere mention of Allah’s(SWT) name from the Bangladesh constitution.
This fascist government and the party historically are anti-Islam and anti-Muslim. This fact is being proven quite a few times currently as they provided police protection for anti-Islam atheists, while killing people in the street who are only asking that these ultra-secularists, anti-Islam and socialist party representatives show respect to our Prophet (SWAW).
There is a historical fact that Sheikh Mujib, after the independence had commissioned a fact finding mission to find out the people who connived with the then Pakistani army to kill innocent civilians. While a few had been prosecuted and the rest were pardoned in general amnesty, none of the top ten Jamaat leaders who are being prosecuted today by these fascist government were not in the list, commissioned by Sheikh Mujib!
It is a farce that these regimes and their supporters are shedding crocodile tears for the people died 42 years before, while they are killing hundreds of our countrymen now, what a hypocrisy!!
The current situation should not be looked at as an isolated matter, however has a potential of far-reaching implication for Bangladeshi Muslims. These regime and their supporters is only trying to build political capital out of the dead, shame! Anybody against these fascist people are war-criminals – this is their mindset! Again, thank you ICNA.
