—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—

JAMAICA, New York (July 24, 2011) – The Islamic Circle of North America issued a press release today condemning the massacre in Norway and extending condolences to the families of victims.

“The terrorist attacks in Oslo and Utoya have saddened us beyond measure. We pray for Norway, and for the families of the victims. We are deeply sorry for their heartrending loss, and hope they find strength in these difficult times.
As American Muslims and as people of conscience we are appalled that numerous news outlets were quick to blame Muslims for these attacks. The media displayed an obvious lack of responsibility by jumping on the Islamophobia bandwagon and reporting false information about these attacks.
The perpetrator of these attacks was a racist, hateful fascist with a 1500-page manifesto and deliberate plan. He was both xenophobic and Islamophobic and was in contact with numerous European and American anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim personalities. We are horrified that such violence was borne from these views.
The rise of Islamophobia fostered by individuals such as Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller has threatened our communities and prompted such acts of violence. ICNA calls upon the international community and the Obama administration to take action against hate groups and so-called ‘experts on Islam’ who promote this kind of bigotry.”

  1. And I am totally appalled at your rush to judgement in blaming certain anti-Islamist sites. Obviously you did not read the entire manifesto of the perpetrator of this horrific act, as you claim. The reasoning behind his acts was indeed his total frustration with the inaction of the Norweigan government in dealing with the mass imigration of Islamists into Norway. I by no means am sanctioning his horrific actions, but stating the fact that he became totally frustrated by seeing his country slowly turned into an Islamic State. Facts are Facts.

  2. This is coming from an organization who has hosted conferences featuring Anwar al-Awlaki and Siraj Wahaj, and who reluctantly condemned the actions of Nidal Hasan. It’s not Islamophobia, it’s opposition to terrorism no matter the source. And Naeem, you stand as a leader in the field of Americanphobia. You are, in a word, reprehensible.

  3. Rusty- Anwar al-Awlaki was not espousing his current terrorist views when he spoke at ICNA so your attack on ICNA on the basis that they hosted this specific speaker is not valid and misleading.
As far Siraj Wahaj, he is not a terrorist and in this country you are innocent until proven guilty. Please show me what Mr. Wahaj has been proven of before making baseless comments.
As far as Michael, I am not quite sure what you are even try to say but the media coverage on the Norway tragedy was definitely irresponsible.

  4. Michael,
Since when has Norway or ANY European country become an Islamic State? There are maybe a grand total of 2 Muslim-majority countries that MIGHT come close to the definition of an Islamic State (SA, Iran), the remaining 48 are not even close to becoming one so what makes you fear a European country becoming an Islamic State? As typical, information is not factual and concerns are overly exaggerated to fuel a political /religiously biased /prejudiced agenda. The fact that you can’t see anything wrong with the reasoning of that monster you are in effect agreeing with his actions. Words have importance and you agree with the words of the Norwegian monster. Good luck trying to find a homogeneous society because no such country exists nor cares to become one!
