ICNA’s Appeal: Help Burmese Muslims

07 24 12

—FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—

JAMAICA, New York (July 24, 2012) – The Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) issued a press release today calling for an end to the atrocities against the Rohingya Muslim community in Burma.

According to the United Nations, the Rohingyas are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. Disowned by the Burmese government, they have been completely stripped of their human rights; most recently, an estimated 90,000 have been displaced and left without “adequate food, water, shelter, [or] medical attention.”

“We are deeply moved by the plight of the Rohingya Muslims, and pained by the massacre of innocents in Burma,” said Dr. Zahid Bukhari, President of ICNA. “Violence against the Rohingyas continues to escalate, with hundreds being indiscriminately tortured and murdered in the past month.”

“ICNA calls on the U.S. and all nations to stand firmly with the Rohingyas and investigate the abuse of human rights and murder of innocent Muslims in Burma. While the U.S. has called for a peaceful resolution, we must assert more pressure on the Burmese government to stop the violence. We further appeal to the Obama administration to provide humanitarian assistance to the Rohingyas.”

“ICNA also urge the United Nations to investigate the massacres, and appeal to the government of Bangladesh to provide a haven for the Rohingya refugees as they flee from Burma. The world must stand together against violence and not let the bloodshed of this community go unnoticed.”

    Aasalam.0.Alaikum,

I am willing to donate for my Rohingya Muslim brother and sisters on your website – ICNA,

but according to this article over here, it states that the Myanmar government has blocked all aid agencies to reach the state where Rohingya Muslims are located.

    http://muslimvillage.com/2012/07/26/25684/myanmar-muslims-suffering-amid-media-blackout/

    http://tribune.com.pk/story/413242/myanmar-monks-call-for-shunning-muslim-rohingya-community-report/

these 2 articles, state that the government has blocked all access for the aid agencies to deliver humanitarian aid to the places where Rohingya Muslims are located.

Can you please, clarify, how your going to provide the Rohingya Muslims aid and other necessities using the donation ?

I am really concerned for the Rohingya Muslims but at the same time, i want my funds to really reach my Muslims brothers and sisters.

Helping Hand is ICNA partner organization working for the relief of Burma.

Here are FAQs from hhrd.org website.

    Question 1:
Does Helping Hand for Relief & Development (HHRD) have presence in the affected area /camp already?

    ANSWER:
    Yes:

HHRD has already started providing relief to the victims of recent disaster in Burma.

Since last many years HHRD has been engaged in Burma relief programs by providing relief to the Cyclone victims in Burma and Zabiha/Udihiya Programs.

Responding to the recent crisis in Burma, HHRD is providing relief in Burma with the help of its partners in the region and HHRD Asia Regional Office based in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Wasim Saleem from HHRD Asia Region Office along with Helping Hand International Projects Director Irfan Khurshid, are coordinating this Burma Assistance Program with our partner NGOs in Thailand “Asian Resource Foundation – ARF (offices in Thailand, Pakistan, Nepal, and Rangoon Burma)” and “The Asian Muslim Action Network – AMAN” (offices in Thailand).

Helping Hand Representative Wasim Saleem has committed him to help the victims of this disaster by his presence in the field, and is traveling to Thailand, Burma, and Bangladesh. He is planning to spend his Eid helping the victim of this disaster. Wasim Saleem has Bangladesh visit includes visiting Burmese Refugees in Cox Bazar, Chittagong, Bangladesh, where there are more than 200,000 refugees living in camps mostly since last many years. In past, we had worked for the Burmese Refugees in Bangladesh, and do the same particularly this Ramadan & this Eidul Fitr Insha’Allah.

    Question 2:
How did Helping Hand vet & select the implementing partner(s) NGO in Burma?

    Answer:
In the past, we have worked on Thailand Floods with these vetted NGOs, ARF/AMAN.

In order to select & vet such NGOs as ARF, we follow very strict IRS guidelines, Generally Accepting Accounting Practices (GAAP) of USA, and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

For HHRD operations, we are very open. So one can visit our website, go to a tab called Reports on the top of the screen, and under that Tab, one can see all the IRS Forms 990 and External Auditors’ Reports from year 2005 till 2010 (our External Auditors are presently finalizing the Audit of Year 2011) – Because of being this open, Alhamdulillah HHRD has got the Top Four Star Charity Status and is a Better Business Bureau Accredited Charity.

This is really sad to see muslims living in the burma, are targeted by the government forces. Its a long story of a untold holocast. Most people dont know about it.

Its now almost impossible for a person to help them personally because bangladesh governments restrictions. I myself is from the bangladesh and ofcourse burma border is just 130 kms away from my home. Nowadays bangladeshi media shows negetive attitude towards this muslims of burma.

I hope that international community will put some pressure on bangladesh as
they also bannaed the relief organization working in rohinghya community in coxs bazar where almost 250000 rohinghy is living. Its possible to aid these people through other channels but best would be coxsbazar.

May allah accept the efforts of icna .
